Remembrance Day tributes planned

WAR veterans will join forces with residents to pay tribute to the fallen at four Remembrance Day parades next weekend.

Events are taking place in Swinton, Mexborough, Wath and Kilnhurst next Sunday, with extra services being held to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

The Mexborough Area Parade will start at 10.15am at Mexborough Police Station and head to the war memorial in Castle Hills Park, Doncaster Road, opposite the junction with Makin Street, Mexborough.

Fr David Wise from St John’s Parish Church will lead a special service marking the 100th anniversary of the start of First World War.

People are asked to be at the cenotaph by 10.40am or earlier to pay their respects.

A bugle first used back in 1914 will be used in the ceremony.

Swinton’s Remembrance church service will be held at St. Margaret’s Church from 9.30am until 10.30am, when a procession will make their way to the nearby memorial for a further service led by Fr Christopher Barley, where members of the public are welcome.

In Kilnhurst, a service for the public will be held at St Thomas’ Church from 9.30am onwards, followed by an informal parade from the church into the village.

An informal gathering will also take place in Mexborough High Street near the outdoor market at 10.30am next Tuesday, November 11, ready for a special tribute to the fallen at 11am.

Wath’s commemorations begin with a parade, setting off from outside the Burlington Club in the High Street, at 9.30am.

Marchers will make their way towards the Trinity Methodist Church, in Church Street, opposite the Wath Parish Church, for a service to be conducted by the Vicar of Wath, Rev Susan Hobley.

The service, which will start at 10am, is being held this year in the Trinity Church as the parish church is undergoing maintenance work.

It will be followed by two minutes’ silence at 11am at the war memorial in the parish church grounds.

Collections for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal will be taking place at all the venues.
