READER PICTURE: Walkers step out in solidarity with Indian marchers

CHRISTIAN AId supporters Gill and Steve Haggie from Wickersley joined a sponsored walk around Ripon earlier this month.

Gill writes: "This was to show solidarity with 60,000 landless Indians, who started their march for land rights on October 2 and are expected  to be joined by tens of thousands on their way from Gwalior to Delhi.

"Many are barefoot, and have saved a handful of rice every day for the last year in preparation for their 300km march.

"We all wore the white caps, which the marchers in India are wearing, and also carried one of their banners across my rucksack.

"We had a beautiful walk, but remembered that however hot and tired we felt, the marchers in India would be far hotter, hungrier and exhausted, and that their march hopes to achieve a secure livelihood for millions of landless poor.

"We were humbled on our return for tea and cake, by the gift of a tiny beeswax candle in a pot produced by a Dalit community in thanks for our support."
