£1.2m plan for oversubscribed school

AN OVERSUBSCRIBED school may increase its intake to cope with parents’ demand.

Laughton Junior and Infant School has been oversubscribed for years with long waiting, as pupil places quickly fill up.

Now, Rotherham Borough Council is considering raising class sizes as part of a £1.2m plan.

Funds from the Department of Education would be used to expand existing classes and do remedial work, like replacing a prefab building which houses the reception class with a new, permanent structure.

Most parents, teachers and governors have reacted positively to the plans, according to a council statement released this week.

The authority’s Cabinet is expected to back the recommendations at its next meeting on October 10.

Headteacher Emma Gill said: “We have a small school, but one which could grow without it having a detrimental effect on the high standard of education delivered.

“We also welcome the plans to do remedial work at the school, as this will help with the delivery of teaching.

“Our children deserve the very best learning environment to support their learning.”
