“Considering this is considered a safe Labour seat we were taken aback by the number of voters that were switching for the first time ever from Labour to the Lib Dems.

“The overall feeling we got was that people wanted to try someone new that hadn't let them down before and that the Liberal Democrats needed to be given a chance to have a say in how the country is run and if a hung parliament delivered that then so be it.”

Love added: "A hung parliament has also caught the imagination overseas. I gave an interview with national French radio station RTL today, who were in Rotherham to report on how the election is going in South Yorkshire.

“They were fascinated in how the rise of Liberal Democrat support had now put the country on the verge of a hung parliament—a situation much more prevalent in mainland Europe.

“The Clegg effect has resulted in a huge rise in interest in France and this was reflected in them sending their correspondent over here.”
