Pirate DVDs man caught at car boot sale

Paul Glynn, of Houndsfield Road, Rotherham, was found guilty at Chesterfield Magistrates' Court of six charges of possessing 2,091 counterfeit items under the Trade Marks Act 1994.

Police were called to the Twin Oaks car boot sale at Junction 29 of the M1 on 17 October 2009 following a complaint from the public and seized 1,499 DVDs and 592 CDs.

Derbyshire County Council's trading standards officers were called in to investigate and found all the items were fake.

Last Wednesday, Glynn was given a jail sentence of eight weeks suspended for 12 months and was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid community work.

He was also ordered to pay £100 costs and to forfeit the items.

Cllr Carol Hart, the county council's Cabinet member for communities, said: “This case proves that we will do all we can to protect Derbyshire consumers from unscrupulous traders.

“People who break the law in this way are not only conning their customers but they are also taking business away from reputable traders.

“I hope this serves as a warning to anyone involved in the sale of counterfeit goods that we will not tolerate it.”
