Names of new snow gritters revealed

THE winners of a competition to name new snow gritters have been revealed with some wonderful winter puns inspired by everything from a James Bond film to a loveable Disney character.

You might be able to spot Licence to Chill and Buzz Iceclear on the roads of the Dearne Valley in the coming months.

The new fleet of salt spreaders will officially have special ice-cool names after Barnsley Council asked schools to get involved with the process back in October.

More than 200 entries were received from children across the borough from which the council chose a dozen.

One of the vehicles, designed to help with snow and icy conditions, will be called Barnsleigh while another has taken the Star Wars treatment and will be called Snowbi-Wan Kenobi.

BMBC’s cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, Cllr James Higginbottom, said: “We’ve had lots of creative gritter names put forward in our competition, making it really difficult to pick just 12.

“I look forward to seeing our newly named gritters out this winter keeping Barnsley’s roads moving.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the schools and young people who took part in our competition!”
