Firework reportedly hits crowd and injures children during "unforeseen incident" on Bonfire night

A BONFIRE display reportedly left children injured after an “unforeseen incident” which saw a firework hitting the crowd.

The bonfire display was held at Tickhill’s Cricket Ground on Saturday at in conjunction with organisers Tickhill and District Lions.

But Tickhill and District Lions said the event, on Alderson Drive, had been halted at around 7pm due to the incident, which one social media user called “terrifying”.

Tickhill Cricket Club said it was “sorry” for the accident which saw children injured — believed to be as young as three — by a wayward firework.

The club said: “The firework event at the cricket club did not go well and sadly some children were injured by a rogue firework.

“We want to say we are sincerely sorry to everyone this has affected.

“The event was organised by the Lions. We’re grateful to them for everything they do for the community, and will support them as they review what happened.

“Of course, people injured had our full support at the time, and we will continue to help wherever we can.

“We are so sorry this happened and to anyone who has been impacted.”

Tickhill and District Lions Lions president Mal Miles said the club would initiate a “full investigation” into the incident so that it could “learn lessons”.

However, Mr Miles did not offer an apology for the incident.

“I would like to assure everyone following tonight’s incident Tickhill and District Lions Club will do everything to ensure that a full investigation is conducted,” Mr Miles said in an online statement.

“And if there are any lessons to be learnt from it we will take these on board.”

Residents reacted to a “terrifying incident”, as well with addressing sympathy for the organisers and those affected in the crowds.

Social media user Jennifer Guest said: “We were there and it was terrifying.

“We were feet away and covering our kids to make sure they were safe.

“It was so close to us and it didn’t just go off once.

“Honestly it needs investigating.

“Although it’s awful for the organisers, it was terrifying and I’m so sorry for the family it actually hit.”

Andrea Bellingham added: “I feel for everyone involved, for the injured and petrified kiddies and everyone who is affected, for the Lions that work tirelessly to bring magic to children’s lives, to the cricket club who make the children the centre of everything they do.

“The Lions and the cricket club have helped us make so many memories over the years.

“The cricket club is a very happy and safe place to be, and we love it there.

“It’s such a shame this terrible one off accident happened, and it’s a godsend nobody was seriously hurt.

“I can only imagine how mortified the organisers must feel, and they will need our support also.”
