Council bin app downloaded 11,000 times

ROTHERHAM Council’s bin app was hailed a “tremendous” success after 11,000 downloads in two months.

The free service allows residents to check which bin will be emptied next and set reminders on collection days.

The app — for mobile phones and tablet devices — has been downloaded 11,023 times since its launch in late November.

“It’s been a tremendous success,” Cllr Dominic Beck, cabinet member for environment, told the town hall chamber last Wednesday (18).

“I hope you’ve all got it on your phones. I have, and thank god because my neighbours all rely on the councillor on the road for bin day, so you’ve got to get it right.

“We hope the app will help with improving our recycling rates. This year, to date, our recycling figure is just under 47 per cent, an increase from 45 per cent the year before.

“The waste we actually send to landfill, which is a very small amount, has actually halved in the last couple of years, to only 0.5 per cent of our waste, which is a tremendous place to be, and not something that many local authorities can say.”
