Child sex abuse trial - Defence: 'Abuse claims stem from jealousy'

A WOMAN accused a man of sexually abusing her for years because he refused to leave his wife for her, his lawyer has argued in court.

The 36-year-old woman, giving evidence against six CSE defendants at Sheffield Crown Court, says she and Sajid Bostan (38) had a consenting relationship from 2000 to 2001.

She says Bostan would visit her almost every day just for sex, then leave again. Bostan admits having the affair with her, although he was married with several children.

But the complainant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, also says Bostan raped her several times between 1990 and 1999 – something he denies.

Mr David McGonigal, defending Bostan, said her abuse claims stem from jealousy because she was only ever Bostan’s “bit on the side."

Mr McGonigal asked the woman: “You enjoyed being in [Bostan’s] company, didn’t you?”

She replied: “Sort of. I would only see him for one hour in the day or at 3am to 4am.”

The barrister said: “You grew to like [Bostan] very much and you were upset when he ended the relationship.”

The woman told court that she became pregnant by Bostan twice. The first time he “forced” her to have an abortion in Doncaster, she claimed.

The second time, when she says Bostan again pressured her to abort the pregnancy, she refused.

She later had a termination, once her relationship with Bostan had ended.

“He ended the relationship because I said I wouldn’t have an abortion,” she told court.

Mr McGonigal said: “I suggest that you wanted him to leave his wife and set up family with you.”

She replied: “Like that was ever going to happen.”

The barrister said: “You have told us all along that you wanted stability in your life and for someone to love you.

“And when you realised he wasn’t going to leave his wife that upset you.”

She replied: “Well, that’s what everyone wants, isn’t it. I always knew he wasn’t going to leave his wife. I was just a bit on the side for him.”

Mr McGonigal said: “The reason you’re blaming him is because you don’t like the way he treated you.”

She replied: “No and I don’t like the way he treated me when I was young either.”

All defendants deny all charges made against them. The trial continues
