Police focus on two-wheel safety across South Yorkshire this summer

The sun is shining (some of the time), and summer is on the way, which for motorcycle and cycling enthusiasts means dusting off your bike to get back out and enjoy your ride.

Before you take to the roads, police are urging ridersd to ensure you and your bike are safe.

Motorcyclists are one of the most vulnerable road users, and sadly last year in South Yorkshire 13 riders lost their lives on the roads, with five being under the age of 30.

Roads policing officers are all too familiar with the additional dangers posed to motorcyclists and cyclists, and for the next two weeks will be focusing their efforts to those who travel on two wheels, educating and enforcing against those who pose a risk.

Leading the work on the operation, roads policing sergeant Sam Clifford explains more: “Within our department, and including myself, we have many officers who are passionate about motorcycles and bicycles; we understand the feelings it brings.

“No one thinks the worse will happen to them, but it can, anyone of us can lose our life on the roads, and while you can be responsible for your own actions, you can’t be for everyone else’s.

“There are things you can do, that become habit to ensure you, your bike and your riding are as safe as possible.

“Take a minute to familiarise yourself with them, talk to your friends, and start a conversation, it could save a life.”
