Police and Crime panel wants Rotherham members

APPLICATIONS are being sought for a new member of the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Panel.

The panel’s main role is to scrutinise the work of the police and crime commissioner, to promote openness in the delivery of policing services and to support the commissioner in providing quality policing across South Yorkshire.

This is a voluntary position and will suit those with a genuine interest in policing and a professional background in an area such as community safety, criminal justice, health or victim support.

The panel’s responsibilities include scrutinising the police precept — the element of council tax that funds the police — and the commissioner’s budget and plans for policing, as well as involvement in the appointment of the Chief Constable.

Acting as an independent voice, alongside elected councillors, the new panel member will provide constructive challenge to the Police and Crime Commissioner and listen to the views of local communities in South Yorkshire.

Induction and other appropriate training will be provided.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, live or work in South Yorkshire, be able to attend around six meetings a year (normal office hours) and understand the importance of public services and how they are delivered.

The appointment will start in October, 2015, which is the beginning of a four-year term ending in September 2019.

The closing date for applications is Tuesday, September 1.
