Pet Rescue's Wendy backs anti-violence campaign

TV PRESENTER Wendy Turner will be joining forces with a Rotherham charity this weekend to highlight a campaign which calls for a full stop to violence against women and children.

Wendy, who is best known for presenting Channel 4's Pet Rescue programme, will be among the speakers at an event in Rotherham ton Saturday to raise awareness of the Rotherham Says No campaign against domestic violence.

Taking place in Rotherham town centre between 10am and 4pm, the event will begin with music, speeches and a march around the town at noon.

It will be lead by the Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Rose McNeely, who will be releasing balloons in memory of the 112 women who have died in the UK in the past 12 months as a result of domestic violence.

Other speakers at the event, which is being organised by the Rotherham Women's Refuge, will include Linda McAvan MEP, Zlakha Ahmed from Apna Haq and Dickie Chester, director of Staffordshire Women's Aid, the Rt Hon Dr Denis MacShane MP and feminist activist and award winner Sandra McNeill.

Also supporting the event will be singer Nicola Harding, who will be performing a song she has written specially for the event.

She will be joined by bands China Town and MonoKing.

Rotherham Women's Refuge director, Kerry Albiston, said: “Please support this local event and demonstrate your commitment to eradicate violence against women and girls in the town.”

To round off the day, there will be an evening performance of Lady in Red, performed by Certain Curtain Theatre Company at Rotherham's Clifton Park Museum. Tickets are available by calling 0844 225 4411 priced at £1.
