‘We need your support more than ever’ – plea

THIS year’s Rotherham Toy Appeal will be launched on Monday with a mission to make sure every child in the borough has at least one present to open on Christmas morning.

Gifts donated to the campaign go to the most deprived youngsters — with a record 2,000-plus handed out last year despite the added challenges from the pandemic.

The Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Taj Khan, will officially open this year’s appeal during an event at Parkgate Shopping on Monday from 6pm.

“We really need your support, and this year more than ever,” said appeal co-ordinator Ann Levick.

“Last year, we managed to distribute Christmas gifts to more than 2,000 children in the borough.

“This year, we feel that the number of young people in need will be even greater.

“Looking at the positives, we are able to live with Covid after such a long time, and we have watched some really special sport this year, with the Lionesses and Commonwealth Games being inspirational.

“I would love to think that this positivity can continue with our Christmas toy appeal.”

The Voice Academy will be singing ahead of the launch by the mayor.

Speakers include Lee Whitmore, pastor at Elim Pentecostal Church; Voluntary Action Rotherham chief executive Shafiq Hussain and Coleridge Primary School head Ian Tankard, whose pupils will sing carols.

Ann said: “At this time of year, the great people of Rotherham come together to support us, and it’s something that makes me proud to say I am part of the appeal, and a part of Rotherham.

“I’m sure everyone believes, as I do, that every child should have at least one gift to open on Christmas morning.”

The event will be hosted by radio station RB1, which will be broadcasting live from Parkgate between 6pm and 7pm.
