Upset as police stop investigation into stolen foodbank cash

FOODBANK volunteers told of their disappointment after police dropped the investigation into the theft of a box of cash.

A male suspect in a hoodie stole the money in October from Sunnyside Supplies, which is based at Sunnyside Community Centre.

A spokesperson for the community group said: “We’re extremely lucky that we have an absolutely wonderful community, who replaced the money that was stolen by someone who thought it was appropriate to steal from charity.

“However, it’s a shame we can't say the same about our local police force.

“A lack of interest and action from the police means that they didn’t even attend the scene of the crime.”

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “This investigation has been closed unless further lines of enquiry are identified.

“Officers interviewed a man in connection to the reports, who was later eliminated from the investigation.

“Other potential suspects provided by witnesses have also been eliminated following further enquiries.”

Sunnyside Supplies was initially set up to help the community during the pandemic. It has since grown to include a social supermarket and cafe.
