Stadium to remain open - but at a cost to services

HERRINGTHORPE Stadium is to remain open – but a compromise agreement has sparked controversy.

Rotherham Borough Council has handed the stadium a stay of execution but new opening hours will put many events held there at risk.

Leisure services director Phil Gill said the proposed arrangement was the best possible outcome of huge budget cuts and would maintain access when the stadium was most in demand.

“We are targeting the resources we have at the times when it will have the best chance of being used by the most people,” he said.

“We know people really value it and we want to find any way we can to keep it available.”

The Advertiser revealed in February that the 53-year-old stadium could be shut for good to save £60,000 as the council tried to slash its budget by more than £20 million.
