Carleton vowed to raise funds for the neurocare unit at Sheffield's Royal Hallamshire after staff at the unit helped him get his life back on track after a brain haemorrhage.

After witnessing the effect of the same condition on two friends — one of whom is now confined to a wheelchair — Carleton said: “I had to do something.

“I realise how lucky I was to escape with my life and thanks to the team at the Hallamshire’s neurocare unit I’m now getting back on track.”

Now Carleton, of Wath, has organised a variety evening at the Sandygate Hotel, Sandygate Road, Wath, which has received official support from the Sheffield hospital and will take place at the venue from 7pm on September 28.

Also among the acts will be singers Keith Senior and Rebecca Sparkle, a professional pan-pipe player.

A raffle and charity auction will also take place with prizes including a driving experience at the Brands Hatch racing circuit, flying lessons and set of Trans Pennine rail tickets.

Carleton said: “There will be something for everyone.

“This hasn’t been easy for me to put together, I still struggle with my memory and things, but I hope that people come to see the show.

“Ruby the dog is a sure-fire hit. She dances like a dream.”

He added: “She will only dance to Motown, though, not the modern chart tunes.”

Tickets for the Sheffield Hallamshire neurocare variety performance are priced at £6 and are available from the Sandygate Hotel or on the door.
