Scale of Rotherham's need for pedestrian crossings revealed

DOZENS of locations across Rotherham have been identified as potential sites for new or improved pedestrian crossings under a council scheme aimed at improving road safety.

Council officers have set out a priority list of 60 potential sites across the borough where crossings could be introduced, subject to future funding, consultation and design work.

The scheme forms part of a wider transport programme backed by government funding, aimed at improving local neighbourhoods and encouraging walking and cycling.

Top of the list is Rotherham Road outside Catcliffe Primary School, which will now move forward to the design stage, with construction expected in early 2027.

Other high-ranking locations include Brampton Road in West Melton, Hooton Road in Kilnhurst near a primary school, and Doe Quarry Lane by Dinnington High School.

A separate crossing at Brampton Road has been put forward for funding through the active travel fund, subject to final approval.

Council officers said sites were identified based on requests from residents and councillors, with detailed surveys carried out to assess traffic levels, pedestrian demand and waiting times.

Locations where pedestrians face the longest delays crossing the road, particularly near schools and community facilities, were given priority.

No formal public consultation has yet taken place on the overall list, but further engagement will be carried out as individual schemes are developed.

The council said the programme aims to improve safety, particularly for children and vulnerable people, and support more people to walk short journeys.

However, it warned that delivery of further crossings will depend on securing additional funding in the future.
