Rotherham United, Sheffield Wednesday, Doncaster Rovers, Sheffield United and Barnsley FC join forces for little boy battling cancer

STAFF from all five of South Yorkshire’s professional football clubs will join in a mammoth sponsored walk next month for a little boy living with a rare form of kidney cancer.

Rotherham United, Sheffield Wednesday, Doncaster Rovers, Sheffield United and Barnsley FC community trust members will take on a 60-mile challenge to raise funds for Rio Spurr (4), the son of former Owls and Rovers defender Tommy Spurr.

Rio, who was diagnosed with Wilms tumour in April 2022, inspired former Wednesday goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell to complete his own running challenge last year.

The big walk begins at the New York Stadium on April 6 and takes in Bramall Lane, Hillsborough, Oakwell and The Eco-Power Stadium before heading back to the NYS in time for the Millers’ game against West Bromwich Albion the following day.

Sam Parkin, youth and inclusion coordinator at Rotherham United Community Supporter’s Trust said: “We wanted to do something special to support Rio and his family.

“It’s important to raise much needed funds for Rio’s treatment as well as raise awareness of this horrible disease.

“I met Tommy whilst I was working at Doncaster Rovers foundation — he did so much for us and would always give up his time to help others.

“It’s only right that when one of football’s own needs some support we all come together through the power of the badge to do just that.”

Sam said the walk would take 20 hours to complete and all donations were welcome.

The proceeds may be needed to fund Rio’s treatment, which could involve taking part in a clinical trial overseas.

Anthony Bayou, youth and inclusion manager at RUCST, added: “What an honour to be able to support Tommy Spurr and little Rio.

“Football is bigger than players and money.

“It’s a community, and together we can achieve amazing things.

“Please support us where you can.”

The fundraiser has already reached over £90,000 with a target of £250,000.
