Rotherham Council closes stray dogs kennel
Since 2008 the Council has provided a local drop-off point at the Mangham Kennels at Rawmarsh for public stray dogs outside normal office hours.
This service has been above and beyond what is required by law and more than neighbouring local councils provide. Unfortunately, the cost of providing this service has increased in the last 12 months due to additional fees for both the site rental and the basic servicing of the facility.
This coupled with the small number of animals taken after 10pm and the falling number of stray dogs that the council has been receiving, the additional cost cannot be justified by the authority.
In future the public will be asked to take any dogs found straying out of normal office hours to the council's contracted kennels at Hampole, Doncaster, which provides a service until 10 pm, seven days per week. The daily pick-up service operated by the authority's dog wardens during normal office hours will also continue as normal.
Coun. Akhtar, Housing and Neighbourhoods Cabinet Member for Rotherham Borough Council, said: "We appreciate that this may be difficult for both conscientious members of the public and the Mangham Kennels, but to ensure that an out-of-hours stray dog service is maintained at all, we have had to make some hard decisions in light of the circumstances and the current economic climate.
"We have not made this decision lightly and have tried to work with the Mangham Animal Sanctuary in an attempt to keep the local centre open but unfortunately this has not been successful. However, we are committed to ensuring that front line services are maintained and both the important daily service by our dog wardens and the out-of-hours service at Doncaster will continue and is not affected."
