Mick's marathon cycling and running effort across the country...and back!

Ex-cop’s bid to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK charity

A Wath man undertook a gruelling ten-day journey that saw him running from Hornsea to Southport and then cycling back to Hornsea.

Mick Sewell’s big effort to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK - after he was diagnosed with it on his 50th birthday - saw him run and cycle 432 miles in 11 days.

He was successfully treated but wanted to raise money and awareness to help others.

Former cop Mick was partially paralysed after a horrific crash between his police car and a lorry in Gwent in 2001.

To date, Mick has raised more than £3,000 for Prostate Cancer UK.

Mick said: “I completed the challenge on the 26th of September having run and cycled 432 miles in 11 days.

“I just want to say thank you to all organisations that assisted me with my challenge by either giving me a reduced rate for staying at their guest house/hotel, namely The Abbots Boutique Hotel in Selby, Jayne Bailey at the Lymm Boutique, Paula and Steve at Ellesmere in Hornsea and Claire Howlett at the King's Head in Pollington, and to restaurants who either gave me a free or reduced cost evening meal, namely the Railway Inn at Ellerby, Occulo Lounge in Southport and Pico Lounge in Glossop, who despite me having a voucher refused to charge me for my meal.

“I also want to give a special thank you to some individuals and my employer who made the challenge possible.

“Maybank Security for allowing me to take the time off, for paying for two of the Travelodge hotels I stayed at and for organising the voucher for use at the Lounge restaurants.

“To Liam of Maybank Security who helped move me and my bags around while over in Lancashire and for stepping into the breach when I was struggling to get them taken from Lymm to the hotel in Stoneycroft.

“In the background whilst all the madness of the challenge was taking place, Tom Forman, was a bedrock back at base keeping the socials going to let everyone know what was going on. Thank you, Tom.

“To my mum and dad who collected and moved my bags about and even travelled to Southport to help me. As always, you helped me and it was and is much appreciated, and I just wanted to say thank you and I love you.

“There were two softies who agreed to put me up in their home at the end of the first day and were then at Hornsea at the end to organise people to cheer me to the line, made a banner, which you can see on the Facebook page - just see trailtolondon on Facebook - douse me in fake prosecco and generally make it all crazy and mad. Dave and Heather you are two absolute nutters that I wouldn’t change for the world.

“And finally, to my long suffering wife, you have been the rock against which I can lean whenever I need it. Through my diagnosis to when I decided I was going to do this stupid challenge you have supported me throughout, thought I was mad for doing it, yes, but supported me none-the-less. Sal, I love you, and I don’t tell you enough.

“To anyone that I have missed I apologise but without people to back me up I would not have been able to do it. To all of you that have donated to either me directly, through cash donations, or through my Just Giving page, Thank You, your donation will be used to reduce the number of men dying unnecessarily from prostate cancer and hopefully work towards a cure for the disease.”
