Mexborough supermarket plans approved

Campaigners are considering their next move after controversial plans for a new supermarket on the edge of Mexborough town centre were approved.

Councillors voted five to three yesterday to support the application by development giant Kier’s application to build a new superstore at Station Road.

Members of the Save Our High Street campaign spoke out against the scheme, saying that it would “kill off” town centre shops.

But Doncaster Council’s Planning Board backed officers’ recommendation to approve the plan after hearing from Kier that it would create 250 jobs.

Campaigners are now considering lobbying Rotherham Borough Council, which will now be asked to approve the plans, as they try to stop the scheme in its tracks.
