Laura’s big challenge in memory of Millers-loving grandad

A GRANDDAUGHTER completed a duathlon to raise £1,500 in memory of her grandad, businessman Ben Bennett Jr.

Laura Barks handed the cheque to Rotherham Hospice — and praised the staff there for the “amazing” care.

The run and cycle event was a debut effort for the 22-year-old, of Old Ravenfield.

She said: “I decided to do this duathlon, in memory of my grandad, who we sadly lost last year on his 80th birthday.

“The care grandad received from the Rotherham Hospice nurses was amazing and the support they gave us as a family meant so much to us at this difficult time.

“I would like to thank everyone who supported me and donated, I couldn’t have done it without you all.”

Mr Bennett was well-known for his steelworks at Eastwood — and being a lifelong supporter and long-standing sponsor of Rotherham United.

Laura said: “My amazing grandad was the most generous and wonderful person, inside and out.

“He would put everyone first and would always support incredible charities, which is why I wanted to do this duathlon.

“The hospice has supported us as a family and have helped us throughout this difficult time.

“I wanted to do everything I could to raise as much money as possible for this fabulous charity and give back thanks to them.”

A hospice spokeswoman thanked Laura and added: “As a charity, we need to raise £3 million each year to keep providing vital care and support to our local community.

“Amazing fundraisers like Laura pay for home visits from specialist nurses, bereavement counselling and so much more.”
