Great Yorkshire Run start delayed to allow for more visitors

Runners have been given extra time to make the start line for this year’s Great Yorkshire Run.

The 10k race has been put back by half an hour to allow more fund-raisers and supporters to travel to Sheffield city centre.

More than 60,000 people from across the country are expected to visit for the Bupa-sponsored event on October 9.

Organiser and former athlete John Maycock said: “We are expecting up to 10,000 runners from all across the country.

“Extending the start time will allow more people to travel into the city centre on the Sunday morning.

“This will also benefit shops, restaurants, bars and cafes as they will be open longer to take advantage of the large number of people in the area.

“The run is a fantastic mass participation event for the region. There is a magnificent atmosphere and a real buzz about the city for the whole weekend.”

Runners will start from Arundel Gate at 10am, head along Penistone Road to Hillsborough stadium and back to the city centre.

Entry is £25 for adults, while youngsters can sign-up to the Bupa Junior and Mini Great Yorkshire Run for £9. Register online at www.greatrun.org.

Saturday, October 8, will see Leopold Square host activities from 4pm, including a Q&A with elite and celebrity runners, live music and children’s games.
