Friendship groups urge locals to connect this spring
TWO groups are encouraging people to get involved in social activities on their doorsteps and enjoy forging “genuine” new friendships.
South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire Oddfellows want residents to “wave goodbye to winter by meeting new people and exploring the local area” through its new season of social activities including scenic walks to day trips and relaxed get-togethers.
Social events organiser Julie Davis said: “There are so many incredible spots right on our doorstep, and as the days get brighter it’s the perfect time to get out and enjoy them.
“For many people, it can be hard to find others who share the same interests, whether that’s going for a walk, visiting a local café or simply getting out and about for the afternoon. “Groups like ours give people the chance to do those things together.

“We’re a friendly, down-to-earth group and we always enjoy welcoming people who’d like to come along and see what we’re about.”
Janet Horne, who has been a member for over a decade, said: “I’ve lived in Rotherham all my life, but, since joining the group, I’ve been shown so many hidden gems right under my nose.
“It’s given me a completely different perspective on where I live, and I always come home feeling energised.
“There’s something special about exploring a new walk, or trying an amazing café or restaurant that you haven’t been to before when you’re surrounded by good people.

“And the best part is that I’ve made genuine friends here.”
Meanwhile the founder of events designed to tackle social isolation has announced the next Music Makes Memories Friendship Lunch will take place at Toby Carvery in Eastwood on Wednesday, April 22 between noon and 3pm.
Freelance community consultant and founder Kathy Markwick – who set up the events in South Yorkshire ten years ago, and in Rotherham five years ago – said: “We are delighted to be returning to the Toby following its refurbishment for the 'dementia friendly' Friendship Lunch.
“Tickets – which must be booked in advance via the venue on 01709 369925 – are £15 and include a delicious carvery and live entertainment from the amazing Oliver Harris.”
