Food poisoning warning from safety experts

DEARNE Valley food lovers are being advised to make their fridge their friend as part of Food Safety Week

Food safety officers from Barnsley Council are marking the week-long initiative (from June 11 to 17) by urging people to use leftovers in a safe manner.

Food Safety Week is a national event organised by the Food Standards Agency and the theme this year is food safety on a budget.

Officers will man an information stall in The Mall Alhambra Centre in Barnsley town centre on June 13, from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

An event spokesman said: “With most of us seeing our weekly shopping bills increase, we are all looking for ways to get the most out of our shopping budget.

“Using leftover food is a good way of making meals go further as well as reducing food waste.

“However, unless you are careful, there’s a chance you can risk food poisoning by not storing or handling food properly.”
