Council meetings could be filmed and recorded

CAMERAS and filming equipment captured proceedings in Rotherham’s council chamber for the first time this week.

New rules — introduced by the Government on Wednesday (6) — allow recordings and photographs to be made at meetings.

Jacqueline Collins, the council’s legal and democratic services director, said: “The new regulations have increased rights to film, audio record, take photographs and use social media to report the proceedings of all local authority meetings that are open to the public.

“We live in a modern, digital world where the use of modern communication methods should be embraced for enhancing the openness and transparency of local government bodies.”

A report on the potential cost of webcasting is being drawn up.
