Pensioners badly hurt in road smash

TWO pensioners were detained in hospital after suffering serious injuries in a collision on a country road.

A 75-year-old woman from Longley Park, Sheffield, suffered serious internal injuries and her passenger, a 67-year-old woman from Arbourthorne, Sheffield, suffered serious leg injuries in the incident on Cortworth Lane, Wentworth, at about 4.45pm yesterday.

Police investigating the collision said that the 75-year-old motorist is believed to have pulled out of a building supplies yard, around 100 yards from the junction with Clayfield Lane, into the path of a green Volvo S40.

A police spokesman added: “South Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone who saw the manner in which the cars were being driven just prior to the incident.

“Anyone who can help should contact police by dialling 101 and quoting incident number 767 of January 8.”

The 63-year-old driver of the Volvo, a man from Conisbrough, was not injured in the collision.

Both women from the Rover are currently being detained at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital.
