Party fever sweeps Dearne Valley for Queen's Diamond Jubilee

FLAGS were flying and the crowds were cheering as the Dearne and Don Valleys turned red, white and blue for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

From fun days and summer fairs to street parties, bell-ringing and tug-o-wars, people of all ages came together to mark her Majesty’s 60 years on the throne.

Children at Dearne Valley Day Nursery celebrated with a special party, including fancy dress in the form of princesses and soldiers, a bouncy castle, and jubilee cakes.

Ivanhoe Mums and Tots Group held their Diamond Jubilee Party at the Ivanhoe Centre in Conisbrough where youngsters were joined by special guest and stand-in Queen, 83-year-old resident Madge Carmody.

In Rotherham town centre, revellers enjoyed a 1950’s-style street party, traditional games, tours of the town hall and the chance to get up close to a Green Goddess fire engine.

In Doncaster, the celebrations included a Jubilee Big Lunch, which was part of an annual project that encourages people to get together to eat and have fun.

The town centre entertainment featured live music, singing and dance acts, street performers, arts and craft workshops.

The weekend also saw the official opening of Sir Nigel Gresley Square in the town centre.

The square, which honours the railway engineering great, Sir Nigel Gresley, features fountains, public art, raised lawns, feature planting, paved areas, modern seating and futuristic lighting.

The Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies, described the occasion as a “wonderful day” and a fitting celebration.

He said: “Doncaster’s talented performers created a great atmosphere and there was a real buzz in the square.

“The imposing sculpture is a superb piece of art. It draws you in by its sheer size and once close up you can see the detail that takes you on a visual tour of our remarkable history.

“People have to go and experience the square and the sculpture. It has the 'feel good' factor and makes you proud of our town.

“Doncaster is reaching for the sky and making a positive statement about its future.”

The party mood is set to continue with a red, white and blue garden party in Swinton from 10am until 2pm on June 16.

St John’s Methodist Church on Church Street will host the event which will feature stalls including Bric-a-Brac, home-made cakes, cards, crafts and nearly new items.

All proceeds from the party will go to St John’s building fund.
