Official opening for £750 million waste plant

A PIONEERING waste treatment centre at Manvers was officially opened by the Lord-Lieutenant for South Yorkshire, Andrew Coombe.

The £750 million facility will handle 250,000 tonnes of rubbish a year from Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster.

Mr Coombe, who unveiled a plaque, said: “This project oozes professionalism and the level of leading edge technology is incredible.

“It is a significant demonstration of what people working together can achieve, and it augurs well for the future of the Sheffield City Region in what is the most exciting period of economic regeneration in this area for many decades.”

The BDR centre will extract remaining recyclable materials like metal and plastic, while organic and food waste is separated off too.

The non-recyclable material that remains is still a valuable resource is turned into a fuel producing produce low carbon electricity for the National Grid.
