No charges for driver arrested over Conisbrough death crash

A DRIVER arrested after the deaths of five teenagers in a crash in Conisbrough last year will not be charged.

The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that it had dropped its action against the 21-year-old man questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the smash on a notorious stretch of the A630 in November.

Friends Blake Cairns (16), Arpad Kore (18), Jordanna Goodwin (16) and Megan Storey (16) — all pupils at Danum Academy in Doncaster — and Bartosz Bortniczak (18) all died after being seriously hurt when the Toyota Corolla they were travelling in collided with a grey Seat Leon.

But the CPS said this week that the arrested man, who was behind the wheel of a Vauxhall Corsa being followed by the Corolla before the accident, would not be charged with any offence.

Mark Marriott, senior crown prosecutor for Yorkshire and Humberside, said: “This was a truly tragic event in which five young people — four passengers and their driver — lost their lives.

“The police investigation concluded that the collision was caused when the driver of their vehicle lost control on a bend and hit another car travelling in the opposite direction.

“Prior to the collision the driver  had been following another car.

“After an extensive police investigation, we have not been able to identify any evidence that would prove to the very high standard required in a criminal case that  the driver of the car being followed contributed to the collision.

“Therefore we have advised that no charges should be brought against the driver of the car being followed.”

A Facebook tribute site called RIP Arpad, Blake, Bartek, Jordanna and Megan received more than 33,000 likes as messages of condolence flooded in after the tragedy.

The driver of the Seat, a 45-year-old man from Mexborough, suffered a broken leg in the smash, which happened on a stretch of road which has claimed ten lives since in three years.
