TEENAGE swimmer Nick Grainger has rocketed to no.1 in the national rankings—albeit for one day!

The fast-rising Wath Comprehensive School pupil topped the charts after the North East Region Championships in Durham—when he also smashed a 13-year club record.

He swam to impressive new personal bests, starting in the 800m freestyle in 8:44.40. Nick, who has just turned 15, finished second in the 15s and under section and was second overall in the open age group against older competitors, giving him two silver medals.

But in the 1500m freestyle he really hit form.

His split times were better than his 800m swim. The 800m clock was stopped on 8:41.07 and his completed time was 16.20.95—earning gold in his age group and an overall fourth place.

The performance also broke the Doncaster DARTES club record, set when Nicholas was only 18 months old!
