New group to look at revamping Maltby

TOWN councillors in Maltby hope to set up a specialist group to look at drawing in more shoppers and visitors.

Members of Maltby Town Council announced plans to regenerate the area around High Street in January.

Cllr Jenny Andrews, and vice chairman Cllr Sharon Biggin, met Rotherham Borough Council’s Cabinet member for jobs and the local economy, Cllr Denise Lelliott, and officers to discuss their hopes.

The town council now hopes to set up a working party which will work on the project.

Cllr Andrews said: “Cllr Richard Price and I took a walk around High Street and showed them what we were looking at and hoping to do.

“The three main issues we discussed were parking, street furniture and litter but we had a very positive response from the council, which is good.”

If approved, the new group will work alongside RMBC’s Wentworth North area assembly, which covers Maltby, to draw up plans for the regeneration project.

Cllr Andrews said: “We are going to discuss the working party at our next council meeting because we want to get the town thriving again.

“One idea is to make the land off Walters Road into a car park to try and solve the parking problem.”

Work is also under way to build a Home Bargains store and Aldi supermarket on the former Lantern Engineering site, just off Hamilton Road.

The town centre regeneration plans and the new working group will be discussed at the next meeting on Thursday, August 4, at Edward Dunn Memorial Hall, Tickhill Road, from 6.30pm.

Members of the public are welcome.
