New bid to solve riddle of body in road

POLICE have re-appealed for information about the death of a Goldthorpe dad—a day after family and friends attended his funeral.

Officers want to know why Peter Topping (56) came to be lying in the road when a vehicle drove over him.

Mr Topping was taken to hospital from Co-operative Street, Goldthorpe, but staff were unable to save him.

Family and friends said their final goodbyes at the funeral at Ardsley Crematorium yesterday.

The vehicle failed to stop and is believed to have turned into Doncaster Road after the incident on December 29.

Posters have been put up and investigating officers have handed out hundreds of leaflets in the area asking for information.

Sgt Andy Noble, from South Yorkshire Police’s Serious Collisions Unit said: “We’d like anyone with information about why Mr Topping was lying in the road or anyone who saw him there to contact us.

“We’re also keen to trace possible witnesses who were in a dark-coloured 4x4 and silver-coloured hatchback or estate-type vehicles.

“Both of these cars were seen leaving Co-operative Street at around 8.15pm that Thursday night.”

Anyone with information should call 101, quoting incident 779 of December 29, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
