Nellie celebrates her century

A POPULAR figure who has lived her whole life in Conisbrough and Denaby has celebrated turning 100.

Nellie Whittaker hosted a party at her home in Micklebring Grove, Conisbrough, last Tuesday to mark her milestone birthday.

Born in Denaby as one of ten children, Nellie attended St Alban’s School and spent her working life at two of the area’s longest-running employers — the Don Saw Mills and the XL Crisp Factory.

Her niece Sonia Kent said: “She was married to Ken Whittaker— they never had any children but she was quite close to her nieces and nephews.

“She was one of ten children, two of whom survive — Nellie and her sister, who is 91.”

Sonia added: “She lives independently, doing her own cooking and cleaning.

“Nellie is a very popular lady and very well known in Conisbrough.

“She used to go and help out in the local shop, RJ News —spending time putting the sweets out.”
