Multi-cultural festival for Chinese New Year

ROTHERHAM’S Chinese community will mark the new year next week with an event for people of all cultures.

The seasonal celebration is being held at Eastwood Methodist Church on Monday, from 6pm to 9pm.

The event, which is being organised by Rotherham's Wah Hong Chinese Association and supported by One Town One Community and South Yorkshire Community Foundation, costs £2 per person, with a range of entertainments planned including traditional line dancing, cultural performances from Sheffield's Chinese School, a Chinese-style buffet and a raffle.

The Mayor of Rotherham Cllr Rose McNeely will open the event and Cllr Mahroof Hussain, Cabinet member for community development, will also make a speech to welcome guests.

Jo Mailer from the Wah Hong Chinese Association, said: “This event is open to everyone and it is a great opportunity for local people of all cultures to enjoy the celebrations and festivities of the Chinese New Year. 

“It also means that local people can find out more about our culture and customs, while enjoying really good food and entertainment.

Tickets are selling fast, so we are advising people to book their place, to avoid being disappointed.”
