Customers will be able to collect any undeliverable mail from Wickersley Post Office, Royal Mail added, with extra opening hours to be arranged to cover demand.

“There will be no job losses as a result of this move,” a spokesman said.

Royal Mail said there would be no impact on deliveries but the move — blamed on the growth of emails and the fall in people sending letters — would make the business more efficient.

“The aim of these changes is to enable us to deliver the most efficient, consistent and reliable service to Royal Mail customers and help secure long term employment and job security for our people,” said a spokesman.

“We have a strong track record of managing change and we will work with our staff and our unions to give them the opportunity to discuss the implications in detail.”
