Motor-cyclist has 'life-threatening' injuries after Wath accident

The 24-year-old rider lost control when he hit the wing mirror of a silver Vauxhall Corsa, which was travelling the opposite way.

Police said the 74-year-old Corsa driver was thought to have steered to the centre of the road to avoid works. 

The red Honda motor-cycle hit a brick wall and a gate, throwing its rider into a garden.

He was airlifted from nearby Newhill Park in Wath by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance at around 3.30pm on Tuesday. Medics flew him to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, where he was treated for serious injuries.

One eyewitness — who asked not to be named — snapped the helicopter from his bedroom window.

“My house is only around 20 yards away so I saw them lift someone out of a land ambulance and transfer them into the air ambulance,” he said.

“A large crowd gathered and all the streets around the park were gridlocked, probably because it was around the time of the school run.

“There were lots of police cars as well and the ambulance stayed on the field for quite a long time.”

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them on 101, quoting incident number 609 of July 9.
