Mexborough nightclub history explored

A NIGHT CLUB which hosted regular appearances by Shirley Bassey, Benny Hill and Les Dawson is the subject of an historical study.

Mexborough and District Heritage Society is appealing for information about Jesters Nightclub on Highwoods in Mexborough which opened in November 1972.

Other regular acts at the popular venue included Cannon and Ball, Ken Dodd, Bob Monkhouse and Frank Infield.

And now local historians are hoping to put together a study of information including the venue’s appearance, when it closed and gather any photos people may have.

Julia Ashby, of the society, said: “At the beginning of the 1970s, Mexborough was still an ambitious and vibrant town.

“This vibrancy was reflected in its extensive and exciting entertainment industry.

“One of these establishments, which many of us will still remember with great affection, was the Jesters Nightclub which soon became, not just a local, but national attraction with audiences coming by coach from all parts of the country.”

Anyone with memories or information about Jesters is asked to speak to a member of the society at Mexborough Library, John Street, on any Friday, from 11am to 4pm.
