Mayor launches plan to slash energy bills for Dearne Valley folk

THE MAYOR of Doncaster is urging Dearne Valley residents to beat the cost-of-living crisis through a new money saving scheme.

Ros Jones wants people in areas including Mexborough, Conisbrough and Edlington to “switch together and save together” to drive down energy bills.

The Big Power Switch scheme works on the theory that by coming together to buy energy, households can get a better deal as companies will be invited to bid for their custom.

In America, 40 million people buy their energy this way.

Mayor Jones said: “Helping to bring down the cost of living is one of my key priorities and this is the first of many schemes to ensure that every household can be on the best possible energy tariff for them.

“Excessive gas and electricity price rises introduced by the big energy companies have contributed to the cost of living crisis faced by many hard working families.

“This scheme gives local people an opportunity to come together to increase our purchasing power so that we can all save money.”

The deadline to register an interest is Monday, February 17 and home owners, private tenants and council tenants living in and around Doncaster are all eligible.
