Mansourit takes title

BIG-TIME boxing’s return to Magna is unlikely following the success of last week’s show at Ponds Forge.

After a bust-up over a threefold hike in rent, promoter Dave Coldwell switched his operation to the Sheffield venue — and was delighted with the response, which saw nearly 1,500 fans turn up to watch Rotherham’s Nav Mansouri claim his first national title.

That means that Coldwell will put on his future shows at the city venue, delivering a knockout blow to cash-strapped Magna.

He said: “The response we had was fantastic, it was a great show and to be honest we don’t see any reason why we should go back to Magna.

“We had a lot of Rotherham people in and they said they preferred the place. It’s disappointing in a way because we invested so much time, money and effort into Magna.

“The only downside to the switch is that it’s not in Rotherham.”

Coldwell was delighted with the performances of his top prospects Mansouri and Chad Gaynor.

Mansouri overcame the Ingle stable’s Tyan Booth to win the vacant English Light-Middleweight title while Gaynor looked impressive in his points victory over Pole Sylwester Walczak.
