Man treated by paramedics after accidental cooking fire

CREWS spent over four hours tackling two blazes on the same Rotherham road after an accidental cooking fire in a flat was followed by a roof being set alight after lightning struck during the weekend’s thunder storms.

Firefighters from Rotherham, Maltby and Dearne stations were called out to the flat on Bethel Road, Eastwood, at 1.10pm on Saturday.

A spokesperson said: “The fire was accidental due to cooking.

"One man was rescued from the flat and left in the care of paramedics.”

The fire crews left at 2.30pm.

Firefighters from Birley, Lowedges, Rivelin, Parkway and Central stations then attended premises on Bethel Road to deal with a roof fire that evening at 9.25pm.

The spokesperson said: “This accidental fire was due to a lightning strike.

"Luckily, there were no casualties. 

"Firefighters left the scene at 12.40am.”

Earlier the same day, two fire crews from Maltby and Rotherham stations had attended an accidental garage fire at 10.40am on Green Lane, Wickersley, coming away at 11.35am.
