Man killed in collision after falling ill at wheel

A MAN has died following a two-car collision after he allegedly fell ill at the wheel.

A silver Rover 45 and a silver Mercedes estate car were involved in the head-on collision on the A631 Tickhill Road at Maltby at 1.15pm yesterday (May 17).

The driver of the Rover, an 88-year-old man, was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “It is believed he may have been taken ill at the wheel.

“The driver of the Mercedes, a 74-year-old man, was taken to hospital and was treated for serious injuries and released from hospital.

“Two passengers, a 70-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl suffered slight injuries.”

Two fire crews from Maltby and Aston attended the scene near to Maltby Colliery along with ambulance crews.

The road was shut for several hours.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision.
