Maltby pit top fire finally out

A FIRE on a Maltby pit top which smouldered for five days is finally out.

The deep-seated grass blaze reignited several times after firefighters were called to Beresford Road on June 29.

They attended several times, up to 8pm yesterday (Wednesday), tackling the fire with water and beaters.

Photographs taken by residents near the pit show thick smoke and a large area of burned grass.

A fire service spokeswoman confirmed this morning (Thursday) that the blaze was extinguished by Wednesday night.
