M1 and M18 reopen after crash

TRAFFIC delays have eased after a crash forced the closure of the M1 and M18 motorways earlier this morning (Thursday).

A man had to be airlifted to hospital following a crash between a van and a lorry on the M1 near Thurcroft at around 7.35am.

The accident led to the closure of the southbound M1 between junction 32 at Thurcroft and junction 31 at Aston.

The incident also led to the M18 being closed between junction 1 at Bramley and junction 32 of the M1 but both roads have now reopened.

A Yorkshire Air Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed its crews attended the incident and airlifted a lorry driver, aged in his 50s, to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

She said there were several casualties but others who were injured were taken to hospital by road ambulance.

Earlier reports suggested the accident involved three cars and a lorry.
