Lucky Lotto couple scoop £80,000

AN ELECTRICIAN and his wife from Rotherham are celebrating after scooping an electrifying £80,297 lottery prize.

Susan and Tony Davis, both 58, bought the winning Lucky Dip ticket when they popped out to place bets on the Grand National earlier this month.

Tony, an electrician who is working on the international station at the London 2012 Olympic City, and Susan, an NHS clerk, thought that they had won just £1,470 before double checking the numbers and realising that they also had the bonus ball.

The couple, who celebrate their ruby wedding in September, plan to cruise around the Mediterranean, including a stop in Sorrento, Italy.

A new car for Susan and golf clubs for Tony are also on the shopping list.

Susan said: “Tony has some regular numbers that he plays but I just decided to buy a Lucky Dip.

“It wasn’t until I was out shopping the following Tuesday that I checked my numbers at the counter and they told me to ring Camelot as they thought I’d had a big win.

“I’ve always said that £50,000 would be enough for me so this little bit extra is a bonus.”

She added: “One of our daughters married in Sorrento and there was a cruise ship in the bay.

“I said then that if we ever won the lottery we’d be on that boat and now we can be.”

Tony said: “We’d only popped out to buy a newspaper to see what horses were running in the Grand National and have a little bet.

“We couldn’t believe it when we found out we’d won. We’ve won the odd £10 before but nothing major.”

The couple have two daughters and two grandchildren and are expecting a third grandchild in the autumn.

They plan to celebrate with family and buy everyone treats.
