Laughton-en-le-Morthen centenary war memorial commemorated with veterans' parade

A PARADE by veterans, scouts and schoolchildren will provide a fitting commemoration for the centenary of a village war memorial.

Laughton-en-le-Morthen’s memorial was consecrated on the June 17, 1923, with more than 6,000 people lining the streets to see the then-Bishop of Sheffield, Leonard Hedley Burrows lead the dedication service.

The memorial lists the names of 83 war dead from the First and Second World Wars.

A service of remembrance and rededication will be led by the Archbishop of York, Most Rev Stephen Cottrell, and the Bishop of Sheffield, Rt Rev Pete Wilcox.

Parish administrator Jill Thornton said veterans from Thurcroft, Royal British Legion members and church representatives would join the parade, which will be accompanied by Dinnington Brass Band.

The Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Rob Taylor, and Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Dame Hilary Chapman, are also expected to attend.

After the service a garden party will be held in the grounds of Old Hall Farm.
