Kids join clampdown on speeders

SCHOOLCHILDREN will join police officers on patrols aimed at stamping out speeding and antisocial behaviour in the villages of Wentworth and Harley.

The Wentworth North Safer Neighbourhood Team will work with village residents and youngsters from Wath Comprehensive School when they carry out Operation Collaboration on Wednesday.

Anti-speeding posters designed by the pupils will be handed out as part of the operation.

A team of 46 people will be part of the day of action which aims to bring officers together with the community to tackle issues that matter to them.

South Yorkshire Camera Safety Partnership and South Yorkshire Police’s Road Policing Group will carry out patrols in the area and a team from Rotherham Borough Council will all be on-hand as part of drop-in sessions at Harley Pavilion.

A police spokeswoman said: “The aim is to encourage members of the public to be involved in the decision making process on how the police deal with people that commit traffic related offences on that day.

“Officers will look at enforcement for serious breaches but will also focus on engaging and educating both the community and drivers with a view to promoting road safety and true community understanding what we can all do to achieve this aim.”
