Inventor Nathan scoops £5,000 prize

A YOUNG designer has won a £5,000 prize with a range of inventions that were far from “run of the mill.”

Nathan Bestwick (24), a product design graduate from Rotherham, impressed judges in Sheffield Hallam University’s Enterprise Challenge with his kitchenware products, including a spice mill that requires no gripping or twisting of the wrists.

Now he aims to use his winnings to develop prototypes further and patent his ideas.

Following his success, Nathan said: “I am thrilled to win this exciting competition.

“I wanted to design inclusive kitchen products which not only appeal to the vast majority of the market, but can also be used by people with disabilities without loss of design values.”

Nathan has now gained the support of Incub, a firm created by established companies Gripple and Loadhog, who have designed problem-solving, multi award-winning products and were among the sponsors of this year’s Enterprise Challenge.

Gordon Macrae, Gripple’s special projects manager, said that the Enterprise Challenge aimed to realise the dreams of new designers.

Mr Macrae added: “There was nothing ‘run of the mill’ about Nathan’s business start-up so we are delighted to be backing him in the early stages.”

Sheila Quairney, from Sheffield Hallam’s Enterprise Centre, said: “We have established a good relationship with Gripple and our Enterprise Centre graduates have found its support invaluable.

“Now, Nathan is being given the opportunity to develop his ideas and incorporate the expertise available through the Incub facility. We look forward to working with Gripple to help develop the careers of the entrepreneurs of the future.”
