Interfaith group seeking volunteers

VOLUNTEERS are being urged to pick up their trowels and start planting.

Many schools, colleges and churches are already involved in developing a community garden but the Rotherham Interfaith Group is on the lookout for willing helpers.

Volunteers are asked to help develop the neglected land by planting fruit, vegetables, flowers and shrubs.

Outreach worker Rowena Crehan from Rotherham Ethnic Minority Alliance said: “This is a really great project that the Rotherham Interfaith Group have started and we really need local people to get involved.

“You don't need to be an experienced gardener to join us and we welcome anyone who wants to be part of transforming this area of the community into something really special.

“It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and for volunteers to learn more about gardening and share their tricks of the trade.”

The group successfully secured funding earlier this year and plan to use it to bring together individuals from different faith and spiritual backgrounds to work on projects that benefit the environment locally, as part of Rotherham's One Town One Community.

Cllr Mahroof Hussain, Rotherham Borough Council’s Cabinet member for community development and equality, said: "Activities like this bring people together from the local community, regardless of their backgrounds and faiths to take part in a really worthwhile project.

"We look forward to as many people getting involved as possible and seeing the garden progress over the coming weeks."

The gardening project takes place every Monday from 5pm to 7pm at the Unity Centre on St Leonard's Road, S65 1PD with free refreshments.
