High Sheriff's worthy winners

UNSUNG heroes and successful community projects were honoured with awards from the South Yorkshire High Sheriff.

John Holt used the annual prize-giving to highlight the efforts of several worthy winners for helping to improve their communities.

Mr Holt: “The High Sheriff’s award is presented annually in recognition and appreciation of valuable and devoted service to the community.

“I am very pleased to honour those who have made a distinguished contribution to the life of a community in the county.

“Since my appointment in March 2015, I have visited dozens of projects around the region and seen the tremendous difference the time, skills and effort of selfless volunteers brings to the life of the region.

“I am especially keen to reward innovative ideas and our unsung heroes, who have really made a contribution.”

Nicola Evans was honoured for her dedicated work on behalf of the Rotherham Unit Girls Venture Corps Air Cadets, in recruitment and leadership.

Margaret Lawson received her award for leading the development of Hellaby’s Lifewise Centre, and for volunteering as a cadet leader and police dog trainer.

Hanif Mohammed was rewarded for his work as an advocate, trainer and mentor with charity In2Change, which works with ex-offenders and serving prisoners.

One award was given to Craig Batham for his voluntary service as a South Yorskhire Special Constabulary chief inspector, while another was given to mark the contribution of all special volunteers in the county.
